The Town of Castle Rock is a Home Rule Municipality, and the county seat of Douglas County. The Castle Rock CO real estate market is rated among the most prestigious in America.  Castle Rock lies between the two largest population centers in Colorado, Denver and Colorado Springs, and is a bedroom community for both. Denver is located 35 miles to the north, and Colorado Springs is 40 miles to the south. Castle Rock is named for the prominent butte just north of town, a recognized landmark on I-25, the main interstate highway that runs from Wyoming to New Mexico.

One of the many reasons to live and raise a family in Castle Rock is the natural beauty of the surrounding area. Castle Rock is situated on East Plum Creek, at an elevation of 6202, at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. It has a total area of 31.6 square miles, and a population of 39,682 as of 2007, a 96% growth since 2000. According to Sperling’s Best Places, the cost of living in Castle Rock is 16.60% higher than the U. S. average. The median income in the town of Castle Rock is $72,563 and the median cost of a home is $457,500. Douglas County is one of America’s Richest Counties with a median income of $92,125.

Castle Rock was founded in 1874. The region in and around Castle Rock was originally home to Native Americans belonging to the Arapahoe and Cheyenne tribes. White settlers were drawn by rumors of gold and by land opened up to settlement through the Homestead Act of 1862. One of the first settlers near Castle Rock was the original homesteader, Jeremiah Gould. He owned about 160 acres south of the castle rock butte. In 1874, Jeremiah Gould donated 120 acres to the new town. The six original streets of town were named Elbert, Jerry, Wilcox, Perry, Castle, and Front.

The Castle Rock schools are in the Douglas County School District, www.dcsdk12.org, a leader in public education in Colorado. DCSD and Arapahoe Community College have developed an agreement called the College Ready Program, to provide college courses to high school students on their high school campuses. High school junior and senior students who complete these courses will receive both high school and college credit simultaneously.

The 72nd Annual Starlighting event was held on Saturday, November 27, 2007. This has become one of Castle Rock’s most treasured institutions as the Town dresses in its holiday finery and residents join together in the time-honored tradition of lighting the Star atop the Castle Rock butte. Fireworks are a special part of the ceremony. Douglas County serves as host at its location in front of the Wilcox Building between Third and Fourth Streets downtown.

Rocky Mountain National Park, located in beautiful Estes Park, CO, is an easy drive from Castle Rock. RMNP is one of the most scenic spots in North America, and offers the opportunity to travel Trail Ridge Rd, open May through October, situated above timberline, the highest continuous highway in the nation. The rest of RMNP is open year-round, and offers viewing of Elk and other wildlife, camping, hiking, horseback riding, mountain lakes, fishing, and meadows of wildflowers. Estes Park is the site of the historic Stanley Hotel, built in 1909, and the inspiration of the Stephen King novel, “The Shining”.

Castle Rock is within driving distance of many fine universities; DU-The University of Colorado at Denver, CU-The University of Colorado at Boulder, The School of Mines in Boulder, CSU-Colorado State University in Fort Collins, and The Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.

The United States Olympic Training Center is only 40 miles south of Castle Rock in Colorado Springs, and is used by 12,000 athletes to prepare for Olympic competition.

According to the Denver Metrolist, there were 149 homes sold in Douglas County West during May 2008. The average sales price of a home was $387,334.

In 2007, 92 homes (4.9%) sold in the $1,350,000 to $5,000,000 price range, and one home sold for $12,000,000.
