Aurora CO
Aurora is the largest city in Metropolitan Denver, encompassing the entire eastern to southeastern side of Denver. Aurora has been named a finalist for the 2008 All-American City Award by the National Civic League. All-American Cities demonstrate community-wide civic accomplishments, cross-sector cooperation, grassroots participation, and creative approaches to issues such as the need for low-income housing, support for at-risk youth, downtown revitalization, and healthcare for the insured. A jury of national business, government, philanthropic, and non-profit leaders will select the top 10 communities. The 59th annual All-American City Award winners will be announced Friday, June 6, 2008, in Tampa, FL.
Aurora is served by two school districts, Aurora Public Schools and the Cherry Creek School District.
Buckle y Air Force Base, home to more than 10,000 men and women, represents every branch of the service, including Active Duty, National Guard, and Reserve. Buckley AFB provides combat commanders and expeditionary warrior Airmen, and delivers global infrared surveillance, and tracking and missile warning for theater and homeland defense.
Smoky Hill Trail, which ran close to present day Smoky Hill Road in south Aurora, is remembered with an historical marker placed near the new Southlands Mall at Smoky Hill Road and E-470. Smoky Hill Trail was the link between Kansas City and Denver, and was traveled by thousands of settlers and gold seekers. Starvation Trail, middle branch, was named for the demise of one group of travelers.
The John Gully homestead, built 1870-1871, is the oldest surviving home in Aurora. The home, originally located at Mississippi Ave and Chambers Rd, was purchased by the City of Aurora and moved to its present location at 200 S. Chambers Rd, the Delaney Farm Historic District.
Guardhouses 9 and 10, built in 1919, were once the formal entrance to the Fitzsimmons Army Post, the new location of the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, a state-of-the-art medical research and training center. Aurora is also served by the Aurora Medical Complex.
The Aurora Sports Park, opened in 2003, is a 212 acre sports facility, with 22 multi-use field areas, one championship soccer field, and a dozen youth baseball and full-size softball fields, used for regional and national softball and soccer tournaments.
Rocky Mountain National Park, located in beautiful Estes Park CO is a short 1 1/2 hour drive from Aurora. RMNP is one of the most scenic spots in North America, and offers the opportunity to travel Trail Ridge Rd, open May through October, situated above timberline, the highest continuous highway in the nation. The rest of RMNP is open year-round, and offers viewing of Elk and other wildlife, camping, hiking, horseback riding, mountain lakes, fishing, and meadows of wildflowers. Estes Park is the site of the historic Stanley Hotel, built in 1909, and the inspiration of the Stephen King novel, “The Shining”.
Aurora is within driving distance of many fine universities; DU-The University of Colorado at Denver, CU-The University of Colorado at Boulder, The School of Mines in Boulder, CSU-Colorado State University in Fort Collins, and The Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.
The United States Olympic Training Center is only 60 miles south of Aurora in Colorado Springs, and is used by 12,000 athletes to prepare for Olympic competition.
